Project Description

The Grand Hotel in Leigh-on-Sea, originally known as The Family and Commercial Hotel, was once the social hub of the town, with a rich history dating back to 1899. Built in an Edwardian baroque style, the hotel was designed to exude grandeur and luxury, quickly becoming a popular destination for both visitors and locals. However, by the late 20th Century, the hotel had started to fall into disrepair, which only worsened until the mid-2010s, when developer Mick Norcross invested significantly in a restoration plan to save the iconic building.

Work began on the hotel in 2019, and it has since been carefully and sympathetically restored by developers 460 Leisure into 18 apartments, with a basement restaurant, spa and shop.

Why Classic Brick?

Great care was needed throughout the entire project to ensure that the building’s original character was preserved for years to come. Classic Brick was selected for our expertise in heritage projects and our ability to match bricks to the hotel’s original brickwork. Our Orange Village bricks were chosen for this project, providing a variation in tone between orange and red colours that is the ideal match for period English properties. Alongside repairs to the existing building, a rear extension was built and these bricks blended cohesively with the original brickwork, echoing the warmth and appeal of traditional English architecture.

After the initial product selection, we supplied some 30,000 bricks to support the project’s timelines and requirements. Our efficient and flexible approach made us an essential component in the smooth progression of this restoration.

Unique Benefits Provided

Classic Brick’s ability to match the varying shades required for heritage structures is one of our main strengths. Our Orange Village range provided a stunning balance of colours for this project, and consequently any new brickwork perfectly honoured the hotel’s original character.

These bricks are also made using time-honoured skills and a traditional kiln to achieve European Standard EN771-1. By balancing authenticity with durability, our bricks not only enhance the visual appeal of projects such as this, but also meet modern standards for sustainability and longevity, making them a trusted choice in heritage restoration projects.

Working on heritage projects is always rewarding and we are very proud of the finished result of this one. There has already been a great deal of interest in the apartments and it has been fantastic to see this beautiful building restored using our Orange Village bricks. We are delighted that our clients are pleased with the outcome.
