Haringey Brick Bungalow - Case study

Our bricks are unique and can give a depth of character to any building, such as the particularly impressive Haringey Brick Bungalow by Satish Jassal Architects.

Tucked away behind a row of shops in Haringey, London, this project has recently been shortlisted for the Architects' Journal Small Project Award and shows what it’s possible to achieve on a small plot with an unusual footprint if you choose the right materials.

It’s a special project made up of two offset spaces topped with asymmetrical pyramid-shaped sedum roofs which fill the house with sunlight. The shape of the building also creates two external spaces designed to capture the sun and provide tranquil spaces for the residents to enjoy.

The house is also a case study of the versatility of bricks. Site constraints meant that all materials and equipment needed to fit through a 1-metre-wide passageway and that everything had to be considered carefully from the first design.

Bricks were therefore the perfect material to use for a variety of purposes across the development as they can be stacked and delivered in whatever size is necessary, and no large equipment is required for their installation.

Our bricks define the aesthetic of this one-of-a-kind home. A material palette of handmade Dark Multi complements the oak detailing to create an expressive, textured exterior that is attractive and robust in equal measure, including the two external courtyards which are enclosed by our bricks.

Our Dark Multi is also used inside the house as the design scheme continues internally. Vertically laid red bricks are chosen to create stunning feature walls that dominate the living room, kitchen and bedroom – giving the whole house a brick finish which wows from the second you lay eyes on it.

Satish Jassal Architects took the project from planning to completion, and that focus allowed them to make the most of chosen materials such as our Dark Multi.
