Navigating BNG rules for small site developers

At Classic Brick, we're not just about providing quality handmade bricks and slips, we're also committed to supporting sustainable construction practices that benefit both the environment and our valued customers. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) rules recently went live for small site developers, and we’re keen to explore how these regulations will impact the developers who rely on our products to bring their projects life.

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and why does it matter?

BNG rules, directed under amendments to the Town & Country Planning Act 1990, require a minimum 10% increase in natural habitat quality or quantity for planning permission. This means that developers must enhance the surrounding environment and biodiversity for approval of their projects.

The new BNG framework initially launched in February 2024, however, didn’t come into effect for small site developers until April, acting as a transition period to help with the adjustment. Small site developers (1-9 dwellings on a site, measuring less than 0.5 hectares) must now navigate a landscape where sustainability is central, and every project must contribute positively to biodiversity.

How does Classic Brick fit into the picture?

As one of the UK's top suppliers of genuine handmade bricks and eco products including our bat boxes, swift box and bee houses, Classic Brick understands the importance of aligning with sustainable practices like BNG. Our commitment to sourcing and developing high-quality products goes hand in hand with our dedication to environmental responsibility and practices.

When developers choose Classic Brick for their projects, they're not just selecting bricks, they're choosing a partner who shares their sustainability values.

Navigating the new BNG rules may produce initial challenges for small-site developers with compliance and viability. However, we welcome these positive changes to the regulations, hoping for a more diverse wildlife environment in the UK. As developers embrace the requirements for BNG and being more eco-conscious, we also stand in support. Choosing our genuine eco products and bricks not only enhances the kerb-appeal of projects, but also promotes a sustainable future where biodiversity can flourish alongside the construction industry.
