Introducing the Classic Brick A1 Fire Rated Galvanised Steel Swift Brick

Introducing the Classic Brick A1 Fire Rated Galvanised Steel Swift Brick Introducing the Classic Brick A1 Fire Rated Galvanised Steel Swift Brick As biodiversity becomes an increasingly important consideration within new developments and renovation projects, integral nesting solutions are now a key part of compliant building design. The Classic Brick Galvanised Steel Swift Brick is a fully integrated, non-combustible nesting chamber designed to provide a secure home for swifts and other small cavity-nesting birds, without compromising the integrity, fire performance or appearance of the building. Designed to balance the needs of the bird with the practical constraints of construction, the S Brick fits seamlessly into façades using our handmade bricks. Rather than being surface-mounted, the Swift Brick is built directly into the wall construction. Fabricated from 1mm galvanised steel, it creates a durable nest chamber that incurs minimal intrusion into the wall build-up while still providing adequate floor space and headroom for birds. It can be used in solid walls, 50mm and 100mm cavity construction, wider cavity walls and timber frame systems, making it suitable for both new build and retrofit projects. One of the key considerations in modern construction is fire safety. The Classic Brick Swift Brick is Class A1 fire rated and compliant with BS 42021:2022, making it suitable for high-rise developments and projects where non-combustible materials are required. Galvanised steel is recyclable at the end of its lifespan, so compared with plastic-based alternatives, the Classic Brick Swift Brick offers a lower environmental impact while delivering a long-term biodiversity benefit built into the structure of the building itself. From a design point of view, the unit is made to blend in. It can be faced with our brick slips to match the brick of the property, allowing it to sit discreetly within the façade. Installation is straightforward and carried out in the same way as a standard brick, typically positioned high in gables or beneath eaves where birds prefer to nest. The result is a practical, regulation-compliant solution that supports biodiversity without introducing risk or complexity to the build. For developers and contractors looking to incorporate nesting provision into their projects, the Classic Brick Galvanised Steel Swift Brick offers a straightforward way to do it properly – and permanently.
Classic Brick Strengthens Skills Partnership with Chelmsford College’s Bricklaying Academy

Classic Brick Strengthens Skills Partnership with Chelmsford College’s Bricklaying Academy Classic Brick Strengthens Skills Partnership with Chelmsford College’s Bricklaying Academy Classic Brick is proud to announce a new partnership with Chelmsford College, supporting the next generation of bricklayers through the college’s Bricklaying Academy. Working alongside EH Smith (Witham), we are helping provide students with access to high-quality materials and real-world learning experiences that will support their development as they enter the construction industry. As part of the partnership, Classic Brick has donated a selection of handmade bricks and a range of special shapes. By training with the same materials they’ll use throughout their careers, apprentices gain practical experience with real textures, weights, and details. These materials will be used by apprentices to construct a small building on campus, giving them hands-on exposure to traditional methods and genuine site conditions. We have also supplied branded workshop banners to enhance the learning environment and support the academy’s training spaces. Our Managing Director, Steve Carvell, recently visited the college with Barney Carrington from EH Smith to meet Course Lead Phil Clark and see how the academy is helping young people build their skills and confidence. Steve said:“It’s a privilege to support Chelmsford College and the apprentices coming through their Bricklaying Academy. We all know the industry is facing a skills shortage, so helping young people gain practical experience is something we feel strongly about. Donating bricks, specials and banners is a small contribution on our part, but if it helps even a handful of students take their first steps into a rewarding career, then it’s well worth it.”With construction continuing to grow and demand for skilled bricklayers rising, the partnership aims to give students the opportunity to learn with real materials, understand traditional craft methods, and build confidence before entering the workplace. We look forward to supporting the academy over the coming weeks and months and we’re excited to follow the progress of the students as they develop the skills that will help build the homes, schools, hospitals, and workplaces of the future.

Women in Construction

Women in Construction March 6, 2025 The Power of Perseverance As a woman working in the construction industry, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of perseverance, hard work, and continuous learning. These principles have been my foundation in this industry, and they have helped me thrive in a field that I genuinely enjoy. It hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has taught me something new and reinforced my belief in the value of resilience. The construction industry has historically been male-dominated, and when I first started, it was easy to feel like an outsider. However, over the years, I’ve seen how much things have changed. Women are no longer rare faces in the crowd; we’re becoming an integral part of the workforce, with our perspectives valued just as much as anyone else’s. It’s important to me that we continue to break down barriers for the next generation of women who are considering a career in construction. There are still misconceptions that construction isn’t for women, but the truth is, the skills we bring are essential. I’ve learned that success is not just about technical expertise; it’s about adaptability, communication, and the ability to lead teams through complex projects. For me, my role as a Regional Specification and Sales Manager at The Classic Brick Company is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about selling products; it’s about building relationships and ensuring that our clients get the best possible solution for their needs. Looking back, I see how much progress we’ve made, but there’s still more work to do. If I could give one piece of advice to other women looking to enter the industry, it would be this: never stop learning, never stop pushing yourself, and don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong. The future of construction is brighter with women leading the way. You can connect with Sandy here
The UK Housing Crisis

The UK Housing Crisis January 23, 2025 The UK Housing Crisis With the UK’s growing population and an urgent demand for affordable homes, the government has set an ambitious target: to build 300,000 new homes annually. Yet, alongside this challenge lies an equally pressing responsibility- achieving Net Zero by 2050. The housing shortage in the UK is a complex issue. Rising property prices, limited availability, and insufficient infrastructure have left many without access to suitable housing. It’s a problem that affects entire communities, stifling economic growth and deepening social inequality. To address this, the construction industry must get building and fast. However, building at speed and volume comes with environmental risks. Without sustainable practices, we risk worsening climate change and jeopardising the future we’re trying to build. Building Toward Net Zero Net Zero simplified, means balancing the greenhouse gases we emit with those we remove from the atmosphere. For the construction sector, this means reducing emissions across every stage of the building process, including material production, construction and eventual building operation. Addressing the housing crisis and achieving Net Zero isn’t the responsibility of one sector or organisation, it’s something we all need to be focussed on achieving. These goals can only be achieved with everyone working together. Policymakers must offer incentives, developers need to prioritise eco-friendly designs, and reliable suppliers must deliver high-quality, low-carbon materials without delays. At The Classic Brick Company, we recognise that timely and consistent supply chains are so important when meeting ambitious construction targets. Our partner factory has taken a significant step toward sustainability by installing solar panels, reflecting a commitment to reducing environmental impact. This move toward renewable energy helps us build a more eco-friendly production process, supporting our goal of a greener future. By partnering with a dependable supplier, builders can ensure they have the materials they need when they need them, to stay on track. This reliability enables the industry to deliver homes that meet urgent demand while aligning with Net Zero goals. Get in touch today to see how we can help with your next project.
History Of Brick Article

History Of Brick Article October 21, 2024 The History Of Bricks – Are They Here To Stay? Since the master brickmakers, the Romans, conquered Britain 2,000 years ago, brick has been one of the most popular materials for buildings across the UK. It fell into decline when the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, and it wasn’t until much later that the use of bricks slowly returned, with Flemish bricks increasingly imported into Britain in the early thirteenth century. In time, the quality of brickmaking in the UK rose to a level where imported bricks were no longer the main source of bricks in Britain. Then came the Great Fire of London. It’s a common myth that the consequential damage was the catalyst for the sudden revival of brick as a prominent building material. But there were many brick buildings in London before 1666, even on Pudding Lane where the fire began. In fact, in 1605, King James I said that no one should build a new house in London unless it was made from brick or stone because he needed timber for the navy’s ships. However, this rule was only occasionally obeyed. The devastation wreaked by the Great Fire served as the ideal grounds for enforcing this law and it is since then that brick construction quickly became widespread across the UK. It wasn’t until after the war that the dominance of brick waned. Pre-fab buildings sprang up across the country, with some 500,000 pre-fabricated buildings built after World War II. With a shortage of bricks, and the need to quickly rebuild the country, a long-term solution that was low cost and efficient was needed. This is where the use of reinforced concrete came in, especially in urban areas. These buildings were revered for their modern appearance, with architects embracing the design possibilities of the material. However, they soon faced criticism and controversy. So, brick re-entered the scene. In recent years, the case for brick has grown even stronger, with tragedies like Grenfell raising huge concerns about the suitability of other materials in construction. Unlike some of the other recommended fire-resistant materials, brick is a much more economically viable option. Durable, environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing, brick is here to stay. At Classic Brick, we supply a unique range of genuine handmade bricks in a beautiful selection of colours and textures. Our bricks are available in the following Imperial sizes: 50mm, 68mm and 73mm and 65mm Metric, so there is always something to fit your project.
